Colorado Summer Road Trip: Red Rocks, Denver & Hot Springs

There's something about Colorado in the summertime that makes you want to get outside and explore. Towering mountains, charming mountain towns, incredible restaurants, and natural hot springs—it's the perfect destination for travelers who love a little adventure without sacrificing the occasional luxury.

In August, my partner and I headed to Colorado for a getaway that combined some of my favorite things: live music, exploring new places, beautiful scenery, and a little relaxation along the way.

The trip began with a bucket-list concert at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, followed by a stay at the Four Seasons in downtown Denver and a journey into the mountains to experience the geothermal hot springs of Pagosa Springs and the breathtaking alpine scenery of Ouray.

If you're looking for a Colorado summer itinerary that goes beyond the usual tourist stops, here's how to combine city life, live music, and mountain adventures into one memorable getaway.

Day 1: Red Rocks by Day, Concert by Night

There are concert venues, and then there's Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Carved into towering red sandstone formations just outside Denver, this open-air amphitheater is unlike anywhere else I've ever experienced live music.

We spent part of the day exploring Red Rocks Park, taking in the dramatic rock formations and beautiful views of the surrounding foothills. The park itself is worth visiting even if you're not attending a show. There are several hiking trails, including the 1.4-mile Trading Post Trail, which winds through red rock formations and open meadows.

But the real magic happened that evening.

Seeing a concert at Red Rocks had been on my bucket list, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The natural setting, the incredible acoustics, and the energy of the crowd created an experience that's difficult to put into words. As the sun disappeared behind the mountains and the stage lights illuminated the enormous sandstone walls, I couldn't help thinking how lucky we were to be there.

The sound was phenomenal, and we had so much fun. If you love live music, put Red Rocks at the very top of your concert bucket list.

Where We Stayed: An Airbnb Near Red Rocks

One of the smartest decisions we made was booking an Airbnb within walking distance of the amphitheater. After an amazing night of music, being able to walk back instead of dealing with post-concert traffic or rideshare pickups was such a luxury. ➜ Click here to book the Airbnb!

Travel tip: If you're planning a Red Rocks concert, book accommodations as soon as you secure your tickets. Nearby lodging is limited, and having somewhere close to stay can make the entire experience so much more enjoyable.

Day 2: Exploring Denver & a Luxury Stay at the Four Seasons

After our night at Red Rocks, it was time to trade mountain views for a little city exploring. We headed into downtown Denver, where we checked into the beautiful Four Seasons Hotel Denver.

Denver has a great mix of historic architecture, creative neighborhoods, independent coffee shops, and an increasingly interesting food scene. It's a city that feels both energetic and laid-back, and it's easy to spend a full day wandering between neighborhoods.

Coffee, Culture & Neighborhood Exploring

One of the best places to begin exploring is Larimer Square, Denver's historic downtown block filled with Victorian-era buildings, restaurants, and boutiques. Nearby, Union Station is another architectural highlight, with its grand interior and lively surrounding neighborhood.

For something a little more creative, the River North Art District (RiNo) is well worth exploring. Former industrial buildings have been transformed into galleries, breweries, restaurants, and colorful street-art installations.

A few coffee shops I'd put on any Denver itinerary:

Crema Coffee House
A relaxed RiNo favorite for specialty coffee, matcha, and breakfast. A great stop before exploring the neighborhood's murals.

Little Owl Coffee
A charming little downtown café with thoughtfully prepared espresso drinks, perfect for a coffee break while exploring LoDo.

Corvus Coffee Roasters
For serious coffee lovers, this specialty roaster is known for its carefully sourced beans and excellent pour-overs.

Where to Eat in Denver

Denver's dining scene offers everything from creative small plates to casual neighborhood favorites. For an easygoing meal in RiNo, Cart-Driver RiNo is known for wood-fired pizzas and oysters in an intimate, lively setting.

Another excellent option is Work & Class, which serves hearty, globally influenced dishes in a relaxed, industrial-style space. It's a fun choice for a date night without anything feeling overly formal.

Where We Stayed: Four Seasons Hotel Denver

After a busy day exploring the city, the Four Seasons was the perfect place to unwind.

Located in Denver's Theatre District, the hotel offers beautifully appointed rooms, a sophisticated atmosphere, and easy access to downtown attractions. The property also features a spa, a heated outdoor pool, and EDGE Restaurant & Bar.

I love incorporating a beautiful hotel into a trip, especially when the rest of the itinerary is packed with adventures. There's something wonderful about returning to a luxurious, comfortable room after a full day of exploring.

Day 3: A Mountain Escape to Pagosa Springs

After experiencing Denver, it was time to head deeper into Colorado's spectacular mountain scenery.

Our next destination was Pagosa Springs, a charming mountain town in southwestern Colorado best known for its natural geothermal hot springs.

The drive from Denver is approximately five hours without stops, making it a substantial travel day, but the scenery along the way is part of the appeal.

Soaking in Pagosa's Famous Hot Springs

Pagosa Springs is home to the remarkable Mother Spring, which supplies geothermal mineral water to local soaking facilities.

One of the best-known places to experience these waters is The Springs Resort, a riverside resort featuring numerous mineral soaking pools at varying temperatures.

Imagine relaxing in naturally heated mineral water while watching the San Juan River flow past, with mountains rising in the distance. It's the kind of experience that encourages you to slow down, disconnect, and simply enjoy being somewhere beautiful.

The different pool temperatures make it easy to move between warmer and cooler soaking areas, and the mountain setting adds to the peaceful atmosphere.

For anyone who appreciates wellness-focused travel, Pagosa Springs is a wonderful destination to build into a Colorado itinerary.

More to Explore Around Pagosa Springs

Beyond the hot springs, the area offers hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and scenic drives through the San Juan Mountains.

Downtown Pagosa Springs is also worth exploring, with independent shops, cafés, and restaurants clustered near the river.

For a relaxed mountain getaway, I'd recommend spending at least one night here rather than rushing through. A morning coffee overlooking the river and another soak before leaving would be a lovely way to experience the town.

Day 4: Ouray, the Switzerland of America

Our next stop was Ouray, a tiny mountain town surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in Colorado.

Nicknamed the Switzerland of America, Ouray sits in a dramatic valley surrounded by towering peaks. With its historic Main Street, alpine setting, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, it's one of those places that feels almost too beautiful to be real.

The drive from Pagosa Springs takes approximately three hours, passing through beautiful southwestern Colorado landscapes.

Discovering Ouray's Mountain Charm

One of the best things about Ouray is simply exploring the town itself. Historic buildings line Main Street, with small boutiques, galleries, cafés, and restaurants framed by enormous mountains in nearly every direction.

It's a destination that feels refreshingly different from the larger resort towns. There's an old-fashioned charm here, and the surrounding wilderness is always the main attraction.

Things to See Around Ouray

For travelers planning their own visit, these are some of the area's standout experiences:

Box Cañon Falls: A dramatic 285-foot waterfall that plunges through a narrow quartzite canyon. A short walking trail leads into the gorge, where visitors can experience the power of the waterfall up close.

Million Dollar Highway: One of Colorado's most famous scenic drives, this 25-mile stretch of Highway 550 connects Ouray and Silverton through the San Juan Mountains. Expect hairpin turns, dramatic drop-offs, alpine scenery, and unforgettable viewpoints.

Ouray Hot Springs: If you haven't had enough geothermal relaxation, the town's public hot springs complex offers several soaking pools surrounded by mountain views.

Historic Downtown: Leave some time to wander Main Street, browse independent shops, and enjoy the town's mountain atmosphere.

For dinner, Brickhouse 737 is a great option to consider. This intimate Main Street restaurant features creative, seasonally influenced dishes and craft cocktails, making it an appealing choice for a special evening in the mountains.

Ouray is a place I'd recommend to anyone who loves dramatic scenery, charming small towns, and a sense of adventure.

Day 5: A Little More Mountain Magic

With so much natural beauty in southwestern Colorado, an extra day is the perfect opportunity to slow down and enjoy the scenery.

For anyone extending this itinerary, I'd suggest spending the morning exploring more of Ouray or venturing toward nearby Silverton. The San Juan Mountains are especially beautiful in August, when the landscape is green, the mountain air is refreshing, and summer wildflowers can still be found at higher elevations.

This is also an ideal opportunity to enjoy another scenic hike, stop for a leisurely lunch, or simply find a beautiful viewpoint and take it all in.

After several days of exploring, there's something wonderful about having an afternoon without a packed schedule. Sometimes the most memorable travel moments are the ones you didn't plan.

Day 6: Heading Home

After five nights in Colorado, it was time to head home.

From the incredible concert experience at Red Rocks to Denver's creative neighborhoods and the spectacular landscapes of southwestern Colorado, this trip was a wonderful reminder of how much variety one destination can offer.

Colorado really does have something for everyone, whether you're drawn to luxury hotels, live music, wellness experiences, or adventures in the great outdoors.

And while we packed a lot into our getaway, I left feeling like there was still so much more to explore.

Colorado Travel Tips: What to Know Before You Go

  • Plan for long driving distances. Denver, Pagosa Springs, and Ouray are spread across Colorado. This itinerary works best as a road trip with overnight stops rather than day trips from Denver.

  • Pack layers, even in August. Warm afternoons can turn into chilly evenings, especially in the mountains and at outdoor concerts.

  • Book Red Rocks tickets early. Popular shows sell out, and nearby accommodations can be limited.

  • Allow time to acclimate to the altitude. Drink plenty of water and avoid overexerting yourself when you first arrive.

  • Reserve hot springs experiences in advance. Check day-pass availability and access rules before visiting.

  • Consider flying home from a regional airport. Depending on your itinerary, Durango or Montrose may be more convenient than driving all the way back to Denver.
